Why is it that we, an educated group of people that understand
about chemical reactions, do not think what we eat matters?
When you drink an alcoholic beverage you know what it will do
to you. When you take an aspirin you know it will chemically
affect your body. So why is it that we don’t even think about
eating a hamburger, fries and an ice cream shake? Chemically
this is a very complex meal. Plus the dairy and ice of the shake
have slowed down or stopped digestion. Then we wonder why
our bodies get fat, or bloated, or have gas.
Let’s look at the slow metabolism. There are many causes for a
digestive system not to work well. One is the first stage of
digestion, chewing your food. Yes I know is sounds to simple, but
that’s it. I have been guilty of chomp, chomp swallowing. Ask a
person who does autopsies, they are amazed about the size of the
pieces of food in a person's stomach. OK so maybe you don’t
know anyone who performs autopsies. Well I do, and we had a
good laugh over the contents of stomachs.
Large pieces of food are hard to digest. We are told that we
need to chew our food 30 times. One night I was sitting in a
restaurant that was to noisy to talk in. Bored, I started watching
people eat. Most only chewed their food for fifteen times, and if
they were eating the yeast rolls it was only ten times. Well I don’
t know about you, but I will not sit there and count while I chew.
So what can I do to make sure I am chewing my food well?
Here’s a suggestion. Chew a normal mouthful of food for thirty
times, feel around in your mouth (no need to use you fingers, the
tongue will do.) Now slow down and enjoy the experience. One
way to gauge how well you are doing is notice how much
beverage you are drinking with the meal. If you chew your food
well there is not a need to wash large chunks down. If you watch
people who eat fast and do not chew their food, they drink two or
more glasses of beverage per meal.
Now that you have improved the first stage of digestion, let's go
to second stage, the stomach. This is not an anatomy book, so I
will not get technical; basically the stomach holds and breaks
down food. Ice and cold beverages slow down or stop the
digestion process; they are bad for the human body. The United
State is the only country in the would that drinks all it beverages
cold. We also have more overweight people in our country. Yet
there are other countries where they eat as many sweets and
carbohydrates as we do. So why do we have the weight problem?
The answer is ice. Ice and cold beverages slows down or stops
the digestion process. Take a glass of ice water and pour it down
the front of you. What is your reaction? You may jump away
from it or even scream. It does not feel good. For some it causes
physical pain. So why do we not get the same reaction when we
drink the same glass of ice water? The answer, we do not have
the same nerve ending in our esophagus and stomach as we do on
our skin. When we put ice on our skin there is pain until the
nerve endings get cold and go numb. Ice constricts, and numbs
what it touches. Our bodies are 98.6° inside, and when you put a
colder substance into the human body it constricts the organs it
touches. So not only does it constrict the esophagus and stomach,
but it also constricts the hormone producing organs like the
thyroid, thalamus and pancreas. It is my theory is that the US
has such a problem with adult diabetes and thyroid problems
because we use ice.
Ice and cold water can kill. We call it hypothermia. Water
conducts heat away from the body 25 times faster than air
because it has a greater density. Our bodies use heat to run
every cell in our body. The hypothalamus is the major center of
the brain that regulates body temperature. It is sensitive to blood
temperature changes of as little as 0.5°. So when you consume
cold food or beverages you affect your body’s metabolism. When
the core body temperature falls below 98.6°, chemical reactions
in the body slow down, including digestion, hormone production
and insulin production. Mild hypothermia in most people starts
when the body’s core temperature is below 97°.
So do you and your body a favor. Don’t eat or drink cold
substances. Over the years I have heard a lot of complaining
about this. “I love ice.” “I can’t drink it without it being cold.”
“Warm beer taste like *#@#.” All I can say is try it for thirty
days. See if you feel better. Most people who go with out ice for
thirty days do not go back to ice. They find when their bodies
beginning to work better because they are running at 98.6° all
the time. If they do have a glass of ice tea, cause grandma just
can not get use to you not having ice in your tea, they might feel
light headed, nauseated, maybe a slight headache.
Be kind to your body. When you do not feel good there is a
reason. Look for it and do not repeat what caused the problem.
Observe and learn from your body.
